Been marching for twelve years, and been around the ensemble quite a lot.
Started marching band in 8th grade. We start taking younger members, and incorporating easier parts and marching technique to get students acquainted with basic marching practices in order to become full members upon entering high school. I played mellophone that year. My freshman year I played mellophone, and double half of the show on trumpet. Sophomore year found me marching baritone for football season and 2nd bass in WGI. Junior year I marched 2nd bass on the field, and was in the front ensemble for WGI. Senior year was quite a feat, marching mellophone again, being a part-time field conductor, and attempting some impromptu guard work with some other fellow band mates. I marched 2nd bass again in WGI.
I marched euphonium in college for three years, did guard for one year on flag and rifle, and was on the cymbal line one year. Also marched baritone with Southwind in 2007, although that opportunity was cut short mid-season.
For all you folks who may play bassoon or oboe, or anything else that doesn't have a home on the field, take advantage of it! March something new and see what kinds of success you can find! Maybe you like colorguard, or maybe you've wanted to see what it's like playing in the drumline, or maybe you want to learn another wind instrument. Marching so many areas has helped me learn a lot, and I've gained a lot of priceless knowledge along the way. Talk to your high school and college directors. At my college if you are a double reed player, you aren't tied down to a spot on the field and have a choice to do what you want. I'm glad I took part in that opportunity!
My Judging Board
10 - Drill is clean, creative, colorful. Guard work is interesting; not repetitive. A show that has clearly been given serious attention.
8-9 - A typical show with a higher count of redeeming qualities, but not quite a 10.
7 - Typical score. Show is clean and interesting, and has many positive qualities. Some areas could use some work, but overall, a good job done.
1-4 - "Fantasy" drill. Bad kaleidoscope drill.

Me in the Southwind bari arc in Louisville and the MML poster I made for '08 DCI finals. And then there is just poor awesomeness in it's purest form.
