How to set up an MML Drillcast on Justin.TV
I'm going to be the first to try it...
I'm going to broadcast "MML - How to make a Ballad" since I always have people asking how to make ballads... justin.tv/broadcast?section=on2 The first broadcast will just be an old show, just to try it out.
You need to link directly to your channel. The URL will be something like justin.tv/ejrowland
Thanks Joe.
I might do this one day. And, did you adopt the term "Drillcast"?
scratch that...it turns out my computer isn't good enough.
There are already terms like "lifecast" floating around, and I thought "drillcast" was simpler than "broadcast of me making a show." Whatever works for you, though.
It sounds cool.
Im going to use that.
I should probably add that my specs are a bit on the high side:
Vista 64-bit 2.4 GHz Quad Core 4 GB RAM Radeon HD 3650 But you can always make adjustments if you have trouble. For instance, try a lower frame rate or without audio. This is where FME is useful, since you have more control over these things.
Is there a big difference between the Adobe Encoder version 2.5 and 3.0?
Im not sure which one to download, because the tutorial only has 2.5.
I use 3.0 and it looks very similar to what was in the tutorial. Justin.TV lets you export settings for both versions.
does it work with macs?
How did you chat with us and make your show at the same time?
Did you have 2 computers by your side?
@Tellesus: I had a separate window open to the channel, to chat with. I also have a laptop that I could've used, but this was more convenient.
@Steve Vaughn: For this software, PC only. JTV has a FAQ for Mac broadcasting: justin.tv/p/mac_broadcasting
It would be fun to do this, but I'm not sure I would have the patience to write a lot at once like that, but then again you didn't make an entire show last night. But my computer is most likely not good enough, so I'll just have to wait until I get a laptop for college, lol.
But it would be fun to see other people make some broadcasts =) It's really fun to see the process of other people's drill writing and compare it to your own way of doing things.
Oh, I forgot to ask - is all the software free?
Ok, i have everything set up for the video capture, but i don't understand how to get it on JustinTV.
@Jason, the software is free.
@Tellesus, once you have VHScrCap "locked" onto your window, the easiest thing to do is hit the Broadcast link on JTV, then go to the "Best" tab. You should see your video showing up in the frame. You can adjust some of the bandwidth settings, and then start broadcasting.
Oh ok, i will try that.
Im sorry im asking so many questions. Log in to add a comment. |

The 2 programs he talks about are:
VHScrCap = captures the on-screen video
hmelyoff.com/index.php?section=4
Flash Media Encoder = streams the video out to JTV
adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/flashmediaenco...
It will take some patience to get everything going, as not everything is user-friendly, but following that tutorial should get you most of the way there.
A couple notes:
1) One difference from the tutorial: When you configure VHScrCap, under the Capture tab, check Track Window. Then click "Select" and then click the red crosshairs on the browser window you're using for MML.
2) For my first cast, I actually skipped FME, and just used VHScrCap. JTV's broadcast page has a built-in option to stream. You access that from the Broadcast page on the "Best" quality tab. This will automatically pull in whatever your VHScrCap is capturing.
The good thing about FME is that you have more control over the options. We also seemed to have less problems when I was using it last night. Just remember that if you're on Vista, make sure you run FME as an Administrator (via Right-click).
3) For sound, I feed my portable music player into the mic jack with a standard audio cable. You will probably have to play around with the mic settings on your computer to get it right.
4) You might be able to use another video recording program like Cam Studio instead of VHScrCap, but you're on your own if you do.
Let me know if you have any questions.
