Corps/Drumline in the Olympics?
Actually, I was thinking about it all today! haha
That would be pretty awesome, although there are two main problems that come into play when considering adding something of a more art based nature into the olympics. Firstly, standardization would be a big issue, since most different marching organizations across the world use totally different systems. A good example of this is the difference between US and Japanese marching bands. (youtube is an excellent tool for this example, btw) Another problem is scoring. How do you objectify something that is in great part totally subjective? Just a thought. It would, though, be awesome if something like this happened!
There's going to be an English drumcorps (The Company) in the closing ceremony of the Olympics. Although not a competition, it's a start:)
Many many companies compete in the Olympics. There aren't many many countries with drum and bugle corps. Also I can't imagine rehearsing a show for years in preparation. I think corps/band is just fine where it is now.
The Company is awesome! Didn't they win DCE last year?
^yes they did and it looks like they'll win again this year!
Another thing that might be an issue if they were to add drum corps to the olympics is the field. Europe bases their drill off soccer fields, US goes by the lines of a football field, and Japan has a totally different system. Regardless, it would be awesome to see drum corps compete at the Olympics!
Drum corps is subjective, while 80% of the sports in the Olympics are decided by time and score.
NPR had a cool little interview a few days ago about old sports that are no longer a part of the Olympics. One of these "sports" was actually 'Art'! Artists would bring their "best" artwork and get scored by each other. It disbanded because the IOC decided that art is not subject to the structure and guidelines necessary to create a judging system.
I think that DCI has set up a good system. However, like mentioned above, other countries use different standards and, unlike swimming or running, there are too many differences between nations to ever find a middle ground.
You guys bring up some valid points. It would, indeed, be difficult for corps to compete in the Olympics and for a lot of reasons. I don't know though...I always sigh when I watch it because there's no music component. That's only because I'm not good at sports though. xD Thanks for the input!
There aren't enough countries that would be able to pull together a good enough corps to represent them.
Even baseball isn't an olympic sport for this reason. It would be the exact same countries on the medal stand each olympics.
I did have the same thought cross my mind. If stuff like Dressage ("Horse dancing" as some people call it) and the mat routines in gymnastics (these remind me of colorguard, except... more intense?) is there, why not band or corps?
I did actually write about this on my Tumblr blog, if anyone's interested: my-psychological-tower.tumblr.com/post/28211015895... Sorry if the URL is weird.
I wish either marching band or drum corps was a part of the summer olympics. that would be amazing.
I would love it as it shows that the world could unite in one drumcorps show.
I have thought about Drum Corps in the Olympics many times and I think it'd be awesome.

Does this only come to MY mind? What do you guys think?
