2012 preseason power rankings

I don't believe this topic has been started and I know someone probably wants to start it, so I'm gonna go ahead and kick things off. Keep in mind, this page is for opinions on how the corps will shape out this year whether the predictions are realistic or completely ridiculous such as putting the bottom 12 corps from last year in the top 12, although it could happen. I'll go ahead and get things started with how I think the World class corps will play out this year.

1. Blue Devils
2. Cadets
3. Carolina Crown
4. Santa Clara Vanguard
5. The Cavaliers
6. Phantom Regiment
7. Bluecoats

17. Colts

18. Pacific Crest
19. Mandarins

4. Phantom Regiment (expecting great things from PR this year. Bringing back Nessun Dorma!)
5. Carolina Crown ( Im not sure what they are going to do with their show this year)

7. Bluecoats
8. Madison Scouts (got to love pictures)
9. Blue Knights
10. Boston Crusaders
11. Blue Stars
12. The Academy (definately going to break into the top 12 this year. Cant wait!)
Dave Foth captainJun '12
1. Crown- sources tell me, at least from the hornline and musically, they're going to be doing some ridiculous things
2. BD
3. SCV- definitely think this show is a hit or miss. I've been disappointed on their approach the past couple of years, but with their revamped staff, they might have a fighting chance.
4. Cavies- will be fighting it out with SCV all season
5. Cadets- a lot of vets left after the championship and they suffer from a "even year curse." They'll pull off the Christmas show, but it will be tough.
6. Phantom
7. Blue Stars- pollitically, it will be tough for DCI to put us here, but we really do have a killer show this year.
8. Bluecoats- in my dreams, I'd like for us to be deuking it out with Phantom and Bluecoats all year.
9. Madison
10. Boston
11. Blue Knights
12. Spirit or Academy

Not disagreeing by any means, but I'm kinda suprised at how low everyone has the Scouts, any insight to that?
FreakoftheArts73 Jun '12  /  edited Jun '12
I was just about to say something similar. The Scouts are bringing some huge surprises, I'm positive.

1. Blue Devils

@Landry Kendrick, i think we're all just hoping to see some new faces in finals and Madison scouts are an easy one to say won't make finals because they don't consistently make it every year, i think it has nothing actually to do with their repotoire.
bobhica Jun '12
This is how I see it playing out for World Class:

1. Santa Clara Vanguard
2. Carolina Crown
3. The Cavaliers

@Landry, I think everyone has their opinion, and if Madison wasn't going through a great staff change (getting Crown's guard instructor), I'd have them near 12th. But I think with their hornline, new guard guy, new percussion guy (their two bad areas), they'll be in G8. :)
Eric Michael Jun '12
I think we can count on Madison at finals this year.

It all just depends on the opinion of a few "officials" with green shirts, so you never real know.

I think as soon as Crown wins one, we'll have to change that traditional "Top 6" grouping to "Top 7". Even though Madison hasn't been finishing high lately, they still used to be a power corps and have two titles. As for Crown, they've all but proved themselves to be a Top 8 perennial corps, having finished in said group for the past eight years.
Vincent Pezza Jun '12  /  edited Jun '12
Some of ya'll don't have much confidence in Jersey Surf, do ya? That makes me happy and sad. Sad that you think that way about us, but happy because we're going to prove you wrong!

As for me, I'm feeling that SCV and Crown are going to have a great year. I can't wait to see what everyone has in store for the season!

EDIT: For the record, Jersey Surf has a full hornline. Just sayin'.
Landry Kendrick Jun '12
^ I do. :)
Landry Kendrick Jun '12
Just saw a leaked video of Crown, going to redo my top 2 prediction.

Carolina Crown
Blue Devils

That is all.
Justin Altrogge Jun '12
^oh yeah!
John Davis Jun '12
Carolina Crown is going to be amazing! I saw that video as well and let me just say. DAT BRASS!

So I think now I may go with:
Crown
BD
Cavaliers
Cadets
^ Like I said. Crown - Best Brass :)
massexodus Jun '12
There is no doubt that Crown will get best brass this season!
Landry Kendrick Jun '12
They definitely have the book to, now how clean it gets, we'll see in August. It'll probably get there if I was to bet. ;)

The annual DCI FUTURE-CAST!

I'm have to say that Crown and Blue Devils will be head to head. I personally don't like the Blue Devils. I feel that there "innovative" shows are just starting to turn into BOA styled shows. They lack the story telling power that other corps are starting to produce (i.e Cadets,Crown, Cavaliers, and especially Phantom) That being said they are a fantastic corps that executes every show to near perfection. I guess you could say I don't like there style. Anyway... My prediction is as follows...

1.Carolina Crown
1.The Blue Devils
3.The Cadets
4.Phantom Regiment
5.The Cavaliers
6.Santa Clara Vanguard
7.The Blue Coats
8.The Madison Scouts

Cadetalier Jun '12
- The Cadets will dominate out the gate on GE alone, won't put cheese into their show until after Atlanta (which they will then remove before Allentown) and place top 3.

- The Blue Devils will (suprisingly) have a cohesive, very clean show well received by fans and judges, until they water down the book mid-season [YOUR PRESEASON RECORDINGS SHOULD BE THE FINALS TAPE! >=( ].

- Cavies won't medal for second time in 4 years, and the 3rd time since 1998. That being said, they will score higher than 96.0 (for the 15th year in a row!), provided their brass and percussion is as good as or better than last year.

-Phantom will start the season strong, but will not place in top 5 because...

- SCV's music score will be at least 1 point better than Phantom by finals. Brass and percussion will finish top 3 while visual stays at same level as PR.

- Bluecoats will place anywhere between 4 and 9, guard and visual may/ may not kill their score

- Boston retains 8 spot by tenths over Madison and Blue Knights after being neck and neck all summer.

- Academy, Spirit, Glassmen, Troopers, Crossmen brawl over last finals spot, Blue Stars sits and watches comfortably 2 pts ahead all summer.

- Pioneer will not finish last.

Now, about Crown. I've heard their show, and after picking my jaw up from the floor, I realize that 'For the Common Good' has a VERY good chance of bringing them a championship, or leave them in a VERY disappointing 5th place(They WILL place top 5). I honestly have NO IDEA what to expect from them...except their 3rd Jim Ott award in 4 years; their brass is on a whole other PLANET than everyone else right now.

Better get your popcorn, because this is shaping up to be one of the best DCI seasons in a long, long time :)
Armando Loney Jun '12
So many Blue Devils Fans.

Phanotom will medal this year.
John Davis Jun '12
@Cadetalier...I'm ready!
Kyle Thompson Jun '12
Does anyone know where you can find a video of Crown?
John Davis Jun '12
There was one on YouTube, but I'm sure they would have taken it down by now. It was out a few days ago.
Nowhere as of now, unfortunately. There was one up that was removed sometime in the past 24 hours.
tengu Jun '12
My top 12...
1st: Carolina Crown, they are performing "That Show"...no doubt in my mind that they will win.
2nd: Blue Devils, always end up either second or first soo...
3rd: Cavaliers, always on point..
4th: SCV,...staff...nuff said
5th: The Cadets, from a cadets fan myself, not feelin it this year...
6th: Phantom Regiment, most likely similar to last year...
7th: Madison Scouts, definitively NOT getting 10th this year...
8th: Blue Knights, did an Amazing job last year... accept the same this year!
9th: SOA, REALLY impressed on how there identity is change for the good...
10th: Bluecoats,...im going to get ALOT of criticism, but im not really impressed so far!
11th: BAC,...good show...up to them to execute.
12th: Troopers, amazing show concept and really looking forward to hearing them!
I will most likely update later again...
tengu Jun '12
Like all the comments about...
Carolina Crown wining dci, there music is like...a particular corps in 1993...and
Madison Scouts killing some corps, highly believe top 8...their show is very interesting...
SCV beating Phantom, FINALLY! SCV had alot more clarity than phantom last year...and i stress enough...STAFF!
And unfortunately, The Cadets dropping...just watched them...not the same corps as last year. I saw a video of them last year around February, and instantly knew they would win dci...felt the same about Crown yesterday!
tengu Jun '12
Yeah just saw Phantom's performance video...not change the line -up...:c
Landry Kendrick Jun '12
Another prediction to throw out there:

Blue Knights show will be no where close to what you are expecting, it's NOT your average Firebird. It's out there.
Nate Hoppel Jun '12
So, I know I am a die-hard Regiment Phan, but I think Turandot will surprise a lot of people. Probably not gonna be top 3, but definitely 4th or 5th. I am kinda saying that to kindly retort the peeps who have them in 6th or below. And I am pulling for a win for Crown this year. Other than that, I don't really get into predictions. :)

Gonna be a great season! :)
Dalton Bates16 Jun '12  /  edited Jun '12
Landry, I'm excited! I love BK every year. They also carry a big "fill you up" sound. Their shows are always interesting and unique. Execution is their determining factor, however they'll be in 7th -9th.
John Davis Jun '12
Yes, I've heard things from friends in BK this year. They are stepping it up. Big.
FreakoftheArts73 Jun '12  /  edited Jun '12
Yeah - for anyone interested in that new judging system: dci.org/news/view.cfm?news_id=5bc74534-fd5c-43c6-a...

We can't forget, by the way, that music is only 30% of the total score. Crown's gotta prove themselves 1st place material on the field with a completely new visual staff in order to come out on top as well as with some unexpected turnovers in veterans that ended up having to back down for the season in the past few months. They've still got their work cut out for them. That being said... yes, they definitely have a championship-caliber show.
Johnathan Doerr Jun '12
1: LD Bell HS

wa!+ wut iz dis drum corpes?
Landry Kendrick Jun '12
And I know someone in Crown, what he told me was to not be suprised if early season scores have them pretty low, it's going to take awhile to get it scoring well just because of the VERY high show demand.

I saw a clip of their closer, and musically and visually (last 4 or 5 moves are ridiculous) it's killer, right now it's pretty shaky just because it's early, but I have a feeling come finals it'll be rockin.
FreakoftheArts73 Jun '12  /  edited Jun '12
^ I would agree with this wholeheartedly.

I was at Crown's November camp, and I have a number of friends now who are marching with them. There's a huge aura of drive and determination there this season, and the goal of the staff was to get the corps sounding as good in December as they did this past June when the 2011 season started. They're deliberately pushing and challenging this year's corps. Hence the theme. It'll be very exciting to watch. That's for sure.
biscotti Jun '12
^I would agree too, except the time to be rockin' would've been last year...;)
Dave Foth captainJun '12
I'm very surprised more than a couple people put Blue Stars out of finals. I know everyone says the show they march is going to be "the one," but I'm very excited for us to prove ourselves to the DCI community this summer.
Landry Kendrick Jun '12
I just bought BD's preeason recording.

I think BD and Crown will be fighting for it the last 3 weeks or so, this show is VERY innovative, but it's still gettable. My prediction for finals week:

1) BD/Crown
2) BD/Crown

1 point

3rd Place
Cadetalier Jun '12
I bought the recording too and the show is WEIRD (It's the music of BD 2008 with the arrangement style of BD 2010 and the vocals of Cadets 2007). You're gonna really need to see the visual program to understand it. Brass is a little bit worse than this time last year (probably because of the higher difficulty book), but they can give Crown a serious run at high brass.
tumohs Jun '12
I listen to BD's pr season recording it sounds awesome.

tchaikovsky96 and I think alike!

besides moving the scouts up and Crown down a bit we would be the same :)
beamote Jun '12
Yeah, i've just been wandering about youtube, and Crown is absolutely on fire. If they don't win I will start to believe the blue devils conspiracy theory :P I also think Phantom will medal, but that may be because I love Turandot and can't imagine any other outcome for any show with that music. If my cavies can get their full show field ready soon I'd put them in for a medal positioning too. I know they just underwent a HUGE change in drill-writing staff, but eye-popping drill that makes your brain melt is just the cavalier way. That's my top three, but it's bound to change once I've actually seen the shows :)

I honestly think 1-7 is fair game to anyone. All of the corps who I've placed 1-7 have shown SO much early season potential.
If I could have it my way, Spirit would win. :3

i personally think the next top 3 to be SCV Phantom and CC but Pantom and CC might take 1st this year with SCV in top 4 or top 3

Blue Devils: Since 2007, the BD have finished either 1st or 2nd, and I do not think that is going to change. Their guard will once again be a force to watch out for. Despite some late season rallies from Carolina Crown and the Cadets, The Blue Devils will rise as the champions once again. Undefeated? No!
*The Blue Devils - 1st Place, Score Between 97.5 and 99.5, Best Color Guard, and GE.

Carolina Crown: After an amazing brass performance in 2011, I'm sure we expect nothing less than best brass for 2012. The show "For The Common Good" will give Crown what they have always needed, and by the end of the season, their visual won't be to bad either. Crown will start a rally, but will fail to complete it.
*Carolina Crown - 2nd Place, Score Between 97.5 and 99, Best Brass, and maybe Visual, and also possibly Percussion.

The Cadets: The defending champs have alot to live off of. With their show "12.25", many people don't think they will be are dominate as they were back in 2011, but after the season opener in Akron, it looked like The Cadets would be in the hunt all year round. Their Visual will improve as the year moves on. Carolina Crown will be holding them back for most of the year.
*The Cadets - 3rd Place, Score Between 96.5 and 98.5, maybe Best Visual.

i think 3-7 will be extremely interesting!
Given that BD and Crown hold the top 2 spots.
