Aux Percussion suggestions

Joseph Boboige Jun '12
I'm looking to add a lot of aux. percussion into this section, but I'm not sure what I want to use. It should almost have a bomb effect. Types of cymbal sounds and toys is what I'm looking for. The impact with the woodwinds trilling where it kinda sounds like it goes to half-time is the place.

Concert bass drum lots of it to add bomb sounds.

I'm thinking of brake drum, concert bass and some splash cymbals, but a huge variety would be nice. If anyone knows of some cool sounds that aren't normally made that would work that'd be awesome.

For a bomb? Tam tams. China cymbal for the high quick decay sounds, bass drum for the rumble, And if you have synth, low clusters on an organ/sustained sound would work (they'd have to control the volume so that it doesn't linger over and seem unnatrual). I wouldn't use brake drum as much, the attack is too sharp so it can't really build (klanky doesn't seem to fit). After the impact, you could also use water gongs to kind of have a distorted rumble as well. Think metallic, will slow attack, and long decay (cymbals, gongs). Skins work as well, as long as they are low to get that nice rumble sound. as for the impact, that can be mostly the metals.

Sorry about my post...I would say lots of low timpani, 2 bass drums, china cymbal, tam tams, very low marimba or vibe sounds that are quick, lots of tom drums (low or high). Not really crash cymbals or suspended cymbal, because I would think that would sound a little strange. But I hope to hear how it sounds!
