Intro to Piano
Practice hands separate until you are completely comfortable playing the fingering patterns. Then put both hands together. Go slow*! Practice and repetition makes perfect.
*As slow as your heartbeat as my piano teacher says...but I swear she has heart problems
Go slow enough to comprehend both parts. Coordination is always the hardest part.
However, sometimes going too slow can make it harder. Sometimes you have to go for it. I'm playing Whitacre's Seal Lullaby for Symphonic Band, and the piano part is somewhat difficult for me to put together. Once I played hands separate, It took a while to get both hands together. I then realized I Was thinking too much, and so when I sped it up, it became easier. Don't worry too much about it. Just keep practicing.
Personally, I find it harder to learn a piece when playing with separate hands. I learn by playing it really slow with both hands and then speeding the tempo up. But maybe I'm just weird.
Work soley on your non-dominant hand. Once it's as strong as your dominant hand, the only thing standing between you and playing with both hands together is practice.
If you have more specific questions you can ask me. -Jacobs School of Music: Piano Performance Major Log in to add a comment. |
