Marching Percussion Soundfont

Shawn Wright Mar '10
So, I've been working on a Marching Percussion soundfont for a little while because I was quite unsatisfied with the default finale Marching Percussion sounds, and I really don't want to spend any money on VDL or anything of the sorts, so I decided to make my own. The results are... well... satisfying =). I'll let you hear for yourself:

If you would like to receive a copy of this soundfont, just drop a comment by my profile or on this thread. The soundfont uses the same mapping as the Finale Marching Percussion Mapping, so you should just be able to use it in finale if you want to. If you have any other questions as well, you can ask them hear, and remember, I'd always be happy to help you with you musical realism needs =)

Thanks Guys!
@ Wade- That's probably the best compliment I could have received =D
Thank you for the feedback as well!

Do you think it would work with other forms Finale such as Printmusic 2010
Shawn Wright Mar '10
Certainly! Print music still uses the same percussion mapping.

I'm pretty sure *italized*everyone*end italization* (See what I did there? Haha) wants it.

Ok, so I've already got plans to expand and improve this soundfont, but I'm not sure as to the availability of the new version once it's completed, so don't get your hopes up. =P
The way it's working out right now, it'll probably be a more "professional" venture, if you catch my drift, but I'm not saying that I'm going to be stingy. ;)

If you do feel like sending it out, I'd love copy.

hmmmm... Ive got a homemade soundfont for marching percussion, that rivals VDL in realism ... I do enjoy using VDL, but when sound quality is of the essence and one desires a more realistic live field quality, VDL seems to get lost and sounds very machine at times (the battery percussion that is)... still it is an excellent, professionally made, top quality sound library that sf2 technology cant compete with.

have a gander at the potential of this homemade soundfont... (includes battery variations (pearl, dynasty, yamahas, puffies, with all the normal Finale perc mapping), keys, timp, cymbals, accessories, crotales, etc. etc.)

Only main problem, is that I havent a good template for all sounds expanded, so its done usually on up to 2 or 3 different scores (full corps-band ensemble) and mixed in virtual studio mixer.

there are a few different examples and I will be adding more in the next month as Im trying to get some contracted arrangements done...

I recommend with headphones for full antiphonal, tonal effect.

@ skershaw - I saw that on your youtube channel a few months ago. I really love the cadence, and the sounds are awesome as well. in response to your comment, VDL is definitely a very high level VSTi that sounds very good in some situations (again, the battery, as you said), but it really just doesn't do it for me, and in most situations, like you said, it sounds too perfect. My main goal with this soundfont is to simply create something realistic, as much as technically possible with a soundfont, and very accessible, which means extremely cheap, where as VDL costs in the hundreds of dollars. I eventually plan on expanding the soundfont to include not just battery, but also keyboards, accessory percussion, etc. etc.. Also, I plan, in the distant future, to add winds, but not just the standard winds. It would be more focused on marching band, including things like trumpet, mellophone, baritone, euph, trombone, sousaphone, contra, sax, piccolo, flute, clarinet, and other marching band and drum corps sections. I guess really, my main goal is to produce soundfonts of VERY high quality, that are VERY accessible, and to replace the unsatisfying (pretty much crappy) sounds of expensive, CPU hungry VSTi's such as Finale marching band and the like. It is not, however, directed at high-quality programs such as VDL that are actually good at their intended purpose. Thank you very much for the information on your soundfont though! I really like it =)
